GBP Categories

This KB Entry has been superseded by the SEO for Salons Course

The GBP categories that we should use for a client will be the same for all clients of the same type. The reason for this is that certain categories simply rank better than others. For example, for a hair salon the primary category should always be “hairdresser”. How do we know this?

There are various SEO tools that we can use that are able to analyze the categories used for all of the top rankings GBPs for any given search term. By using these tools we can see very clearly:

  • All of the available categories that can be used for a given search term
  • How important they are in order, which allows us to pick a primary.

Unlike service listings, that we want to keep concise, we want to add as many categories as possible that is appropriate for the client because the searchers don’t actually see the additional category listings, only Google (and our clever tools!) see that.

When time allows, I will perform the required research into the 3 core groups of salons that we work with, but for now, add as many categories as you can, and the primary ones for each type of client are:

  • Hair salons – “Hairdresser”
  • Beauty Salons – “Beauty Salon”
  • Aesthetic Clinics – “Skin Care Clinic”
