why your salon doesnt show up in every AI search

Why Your Salon Doesn't Show Up in Every AI Search

AI search works differently from traditional Google rankings, and seeing your salon in one search but not the next is normal. Here’s what salon owners need to know about improving their chances of being found and recommended by AI, based on data from a new BrightLocal study.

Have you searched for your salon on ChatGPT yet?

Maybe you asked for the “best hair salon near me,” “best salon for balayage in [your city]” or a service you specialize in. If your salon appeared, great. But try the same search again tomorrow and you might get a different answer.

Or perhaps your salon didn't appear at all.

Before you panic, there is something important to understand: AI search results aren't nearly as consistent as the Google rank results we've become accustomed to.

A new study from BrightLocal analyzed more than 200,000 local searches across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google's AI Overviews, along with 1.9 million citations used by those platforms. The findings give us a much better idea of how AI chooses which local businesses to recommend. (brightlocal.com)

Here are the biggest takeaways for salon owners.

Presence Is Not the Same as Persistence

BrightLocal found that when the same local search was repeated, only 20% to 33% of the cited businesses overlapped, depending on the AI platform. A business that appeared once showed up again in roughly half of subsequent searches. (brightlocal.com)

So, if you search for “best hair salon in my city” three times and your salon appears once or twice, that doesn't mean you have a visibility problem. That’s actually pretty good.

Presence is a measure of AI considering your salon in the relevant pool of businesses. Persistence is a measure of how consistently it will reference your salon over time.

If you're rarely or never appearing, that's when it's worth looking at why.

But don't judge your AI visibility based on just a couple of searches on one single day.

Google Maps Doesn't Guarantee AI Visibility

You may rank well in Google Maps and assume Google’s AI Mode, AI Overviews, or ChatGPT will recommend you too. Not necessarily.

BrightLocal found that Google Maps included the tracked business in 66% of searches, while the AI platforms included it only 32% to 38% of the time. (brightlocal.com)

Many of the signals that help your salon perform well in local Google search also help AI understand your business. But a strong Map Pack position doesn't automatically translate into strong AI visibility.

AI is not replacing the importance of local SEO; it’s building on it.

AI Platforms Don't Agree with Each Other

BrightLocal found surprisingly little overlap between the businesses recommended by the different AI platforms. (brightlocal.com)

Each has its own way of gathering and evaluating information, which is another reason not to panic if you don't see your salon in one particular search or platform.

It also means we need to make sure accurate information about your salon exists in more than one place.

Yelp, Facebook and Directory Listings Still Matter

It might be tempting to think some online listings don’t matter anymore because they aren’t an important source of traffic or new clients. The research suggests otherwise.

All three AI platforms in BrightLocal's study relied on Yelp, while Google also relied significantly on Facebook. (brightlocal.com)

For hair salons, make sure you maintain accurate listings on the major directories like Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, MapQuest and any relevant local and beauty directories.

Salon Guru maintains a directory where any hair salon can create a free listing. If you haven’t added your salon yet, go to the Salon Guru Salon Directory.

NAP Consistency Is Still Essential

Name, Address and Phone Number, and keeping that information consistent across the internet still matters, especially for “near me” searches.

BrightLocal found that location and proximity continue to influence AI recommendations, with more than half of the businesses cited by AI platforms located within 5 km of the searcher. Even moving the search to another part of the same town could change which businesses were recommended. (brightlocal.com)

Your Website Still Matters

Your website is where you clearly establish your expertise, reputation and services.

For optimal visibility, that means explaining what you specialize in, showcasing your team and credentials, displaying your client images, and organizing your site so both people and AI can easily understand what you do.

That's the ideas behind Showcase, our new AI-powered tool that allows your stylists to upload and tag their best work, display five-star reviews, and help clients find the perfect stylist for their needs. Learn more and request a demo.

Your Google Business Profile is Key

Of all the third-party sources included in BrightLocal's research, Google Business Profile was by far the largest source of AI citations, accounting for approximately 28.6% of citations across the three platforms. Yelp was second at about 9.5%. (brightlocal.com)

Keep your eye on your profiles! Make sure you have a solid overall rating and that your categories and services are current. Keep photos fresh. Earn new reviews and respond to them. Make sure your hours, contact information and website links are all accurate.

AI Visibility Is Going to Fluctuate.

How You Can Help

Keep asking clients for reviews. Keep us informed when your services, team members, or hours change. Keep your online directory listings accurate.  AI may be changing how consumers find salons, but it still needs trustworthy information to decide which salons to mention.

Our job, together, is to make sure it has plenty of reasons to mention yours.
